Senior Communications Strategist
Are you a bold communicator with a passion for justice, storytelling, and building community power? Houston in Action seeks a Senior Communications Strategist to lead narrative-shifting, equity-centered communications that move people to action.
Houston in Action is a non-partisan collective uniting people and organizations across Greater Houston and El Paso to dismantle systemic barriers to civic participation. Our network includes community-based organizations, grassroots leaders, academic institutions, and philanthropic partners, all working collaboratively to amplify community voices and influence public systems. We focus on empowering historically excluded groups—particularly Black, Latinx, AAPI communities, women, youth, and low-income residents—through coordinated campaigns, shared resources, and long-term policy change. Our team operates remotely, holding in-person meetings and events from our Houston Museum District office.

As our Senior Communications Strategist, you will lead bold, mission-driven communications that move people to action, crafting and implementing strategies that amplify our work, engage diverse communities, and elevate grassroots voices. You will shape public narratives through advocacy, organizing, crisis communications, and digital strategy, while supporting our team and network in telling compelling, authentic stories. You will work closely with the Executive Director to ensure our communications reflect our equity and community power values. You will use your skills to influence change and drive meaningful civic engagement across Greater Houston and El Paso.
To thrive, you should have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 10+ years of experience in strategic communications, with a focus on advocacy, community engagement, or social justice
- Proven expertise in crisis communications, media relations, and narrative development
- Solid writing, editing, and storytelling skills across multiple formats and platforms
- Proficiency in digital tools and platforms, including Adobe Creative Suite, social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Sprout), and email marketing software (e.g., Mailchimp, Constant Contact)
- Preferred certifications in communications, digital strategy, or DEI-related training (e.g., IABC, PRSA, or equivalent)
Your responsibilities as the Senior Communications Strategist will include:
- Lead strategic and crisis communications, ensuring messaging aligns with network goals and supports timely, coordinated responses.
- Develop and guide content creation, including white papers, member communications, and multimedia storytelling that inspires action.
- Provide expert training and mentorship, building communications capacity across staff and network members.
- Strengthen media relations and digital presence, secure earned media, and advise on effective social media strategies.
- Support member engagement, creating communication tools and mechanisms that elevate grassroots voices and drive collective impact.
